Process
How we work
From small, uncommon design details to abstract overarching concepts, Rachel Chudley Interior Design is passionate about guiding clients to make their most radical, only-ever-dreamed-of ideas a lived reality. Unique upholstered flourishes that meld comfort and curiosity; ornately sculptural objets d’art that can’t help but catch the eye; concealed rooms in forgotten corners, and even the occasional secret turret.
The outcome is mercurial, but it is underpinned by a spirit of subversion, an emotional authenticity, and a tendency towards the surreal – guided, always, by the way a space is experienced by those who move through it day-to-day.
With a careful consideration of light, space, story and scale, Rachel and her team build rich, multi-layered rooms, often commissioning bespoke textiles, joinery, furniture and individual elements to bring them together in-situ. Lifelong collections are sensitively placed alongside bold and unusual new discoveries.
Architectural interventions allow the once-overlooked subtleties of a room to sing. The practice collaborates closely with a revered roster of architects, makers, artists, designers, and other expert craftspeople to realise every element of a project, bringing this ineffable vision to life.
Rachel’s approach is founded on a deep and intuitive understanding of art — an expertise which informs not only what hangs on a wall, but the precise tone with which to paint it. Colour is the cornerstone. Using the full spectrum of colour, Rachel Chudley Interior Design specialises in nuance and subtlety, creating hues with a luminosity that redirects light through a space.
From inception to install
Following the first engagement, Rachel and a team member will come to view your property and discuss initial ideas, your likes, dislikes, your vision for the space and any structural work that needs to take place.
From this visit, the team will estimate a budget and timeframe for your project.
Once agreed the following process is undertaken:
Design concept services - budgeting, space considerations, moodboards, mockups and a united design plan.
Design development - floorplans, engineering and technical drawings, sourcing of everything to do with your project - from paint to textiles and furniture. Bespoke designs where there is a need or appetite.
Contract administration - competitive bids for items, delivery and pick-up schedule, overseeing decorating and install.
Bespoke furniture and joinery
Our process involves working closely with our carefully selected roster of makers, artists and designers who have honed their craft.
Together with clients and our makers we delight in the creative process of bringing ideas to life.
Rachel Chudley Colour
Whether subtle or bold, using colour in thoughtful and innovative ways is elemental to Rachel’s design approach.
The Rachel Chudley team believe colour is foundational to a room - whether that is the colour of walls, fabrics, art or objects.
Since inception, Rachel has worked with Donald Kaufman, the world’s foremost architectural colour consultant to produce exceptional paint colours.
These bespoke paint colours are designed, mixed and made for a given room or surface. They are what make RCID rooms sing.
When designing a paint colour, everything from how light hits it to the colour of the light itself and how it filters through is considered.
It is this level of detail that allows Rachel and her team to create colours that feel so appropriate to their spaces’ function, position and role.
